Donald Rumsfeld Resigns
Nov 08, 2006
This is really big news and shows just how devastating this election is to the Republicans and to President Bush himself. Though Bush values loyalty above most other virtues, and still continues to stand by Rumsfeld, it is clear that he understands that Rumsfeld is largely to blame for the party's woes. It is not only the way that the Iraq war itself was handled, but it includes the policies of torture in the name of security that have troubled many Americans (including me).
I found one quote quite revealing:
"Asked whether his announcement signaled a new direction in the war that has claimed the lives of more than 2,800 U.S. troops, Bush said, "Well, there's certainly going to be new leadership at the Pentagon."
In spite of the President's continued praise of Rumsfeld, if this quote is accurate, it shows that he now understands that his loyalty to Rumsfeld was one big cause of the Republican losses.
Hopefully, this new understanding will be the beginning of a change of heart in regard to Zionism as well. After all, that is where the President's men learned the doctrine of pre-emptive strikes, torture, and the doctrine of "security" to keep us safe from backlash after we have supported injustice to the Palestinians.
